CHAPTER 29

WhenOfficer Holden arrived at Pet’s farm, he saw an elderly man in a field beside the house. He was hand-feeding a small goat. “How you doing, Sir? I’m with the Blakeley PD, you got a minute?”

The man walked toward Holden. “How can I help you?”

“You’re the caretaker here, right?”

“Yep, me, I’m Will, and my wife Nellie, we take care of the place. Or try to anyway.”

“I’m looking for boxes that Abigail Sullivan may have left here. Do you know anything about that?”

“Yep, she did. Got some up there in the house. She came about three times to drop things off. Pet told her it was okay. She’s a bit of a pack rat, Pet I mean, and she doesn’t stay here all the time, so the place is a bit untidy right now. We don’t do much on the inside. We mostly take care of the few goats here, some chickens, and the land.”

“Mind if I have a look inside?”

“Not at all. Come on in, and I’ll show you the boxes I know of. Can’t say for sure this is all of them. I think Nellie might have put some in the attic, but I’m not sure. She’s gone to the market where we sell eggs, or I’d ask her. None of the boxes are labeled, but you’re welcome to look through ‘em. Me and Nellie don’t go snooping around in the house. Not our job.”

Officer Holden smiled. “I get it.” He followed Will into the farmhouse. It looked to be at least fifty years old and had white siding and faded Charleston green shutters.

“There are some boxes in here. It’s the bedroom Pet uses mostly to store stuff. Poor Abigail. Her falling down those stairs was a real tragedy. And that kid Timmy. He loves coming here. Asked Pet one time if he could stay with us.” Will smiled. “Thank goodness, she said no. Minding kids is a young person’s game, know what I mean?”

“Got two little ones myself, so I definitely get it. I’ll just start looking around.”

“I’ll leave you be then,” Will said as he walked out of the room.

Over the next hour, Holden went through every box in the room. As Will warned, none of them were labeled, so he had no idea who the contents belonged to. But Josh told him to look for journals and documents, so he did. After several hours of searching, he found neither.

Holden found the disappearing stairs to the attic Will mentioned and pulled down the steps. At the top, he reached for the light, a bare bulb with a chain pull. The place was dusty and downright spooky, and he was tired. Holden did a half-hearted search of a couple of boxes nearest the stairs before giving up.
